Formalin-based fixatives are the preferred solution for histological and anatomical fixation in in vitro diagnostics and special laboratory applications. As the gold standard, they are based on formaldehyde, which is commonly used in a 4% solution. However, the optimal concentration varies depending on tissue type and application.
The penetration and reaction rates of these fixatives are critical to the quality of the results. For example, a 4% formaldehyde solution penetrates approximately 5 mm into the tissue in 12 hours and requires 24-48 hours to completely methylate the amino groups. Short residence times can lead to insufficient fixation.
