Weigert Stock Solution A is a component of the Weigert iron hematoxylin stain, a commonly used histological staining method for visualizing cell nuclei and other basophilic structures in tissue sections and cell preparations. Weigert staining is a modification of hematoxylin staining and uses iron compounds as oxidizing agents instead of other chemical mordants.

Weigert stock solution A consists of a mixture of hematoxylin, ethanol and water. Weigert stock solution B contains an iron salt solution (e.g., ferric chloride solution) that serves as an oxidant. To prepare the working solution for Weigert iron hematoxylin staining, mix stock solutions A and B in a 1:1 ratio.

The mixture of both stock solutions A and B is used to apply the hematoxylin to the tissue while providing the iron compounds as oxidizing agents to develop the black-brown color of the hematoxylin dye. This mixture is applied to the tissue to be stained to selectively stain cell nuclei and other basophilic structures.
Weigert iron hematoxylin staining is often used as part of more complex staining procedures, such as in trichrome staining or Van Gieson staining, to provide differential visualization of the various tissue components.
