Picric Acid, pure (moistened with water)

Picric acid (C6H3N3O7), also known as trinitrophenol, is a highly concentrated yellow crystalline solid valued in industry and the laboratory for its strong acidic properties and ability to fix and stain proteins. It is often used in histology and cytology to fix and stain proteins by binding to basic amino acids and staining them yellow. Picric acid has a molar mass of 229.11 g/mol and a density of 1.763 g/cm³.

Picric acid is an explosive that can form dangerous picrates with metals if improperly handled and stored for extended periods. These are then sensitive to impact, friction and heat. To minimize this hazard, picric acid is often transported and stored moistened with water.

Moistened picric acid is less sensitive to mechanical impact and is therefore safer to handle.

In terms of transportation, moistened picric acid falls under Class 4.1 (flammable solids) of the dangerous goods classification. It must be stored in a tight container and transported in a suitable over container that is sufficiently filled with water to keep the picric acid moist at all times. In addition, it should be transported in accordance with local, national and international regulations for the transport of dangerous goods.
