Oxalic Acid Solution for Varroa Mite Control
Oxalic acid solution for varroa mite control is based on an aqueous base and contains oxalic acid as the main active ingredient. The area of application of this solution is beekeeping, in particular the control of varroa mites in bee colonies.
The chemical mode of operation is based on the properties of oxalic acid, which as a weak acid is able to release protons (H+) into the environment. In contact with varroa mites, the acid causes damage to the mites' outer chitin layer, leading to desiccation and death of the pests. For bees, on the other hand, oxalic acid in the concentration used has only a minor damaging effect.
The special suitability of the oxalic acid solution lies in its selective effect against varroa mites while at the same time causing little harm to bees. The application is particularly suitable in the bee-free winter treatment, because at this time the varroa mite population is most sensitive and the risk of harm to bees is reduced by the oxalic acid solution. The treatment helps to reduce the varroa mite load and thus supports the health of the bee colonies.
