Sodium Hydroxide / Caustic Soda 2.0 mol/l (~ 8 %)
The product caustic soda / NaOH 2.0 mol/l (~ 8 %) is particularly suitable for use in histology and pathology. It acts by the formation of salts a precise adjustment of the pH value and thus supports catalytic processes. The solution can be used to denature proteins and to dissolve proteins in tissue sections. This results in hydrolysis of peptide bonds and samples can be further analyzed.
The way sodium hydroxide works is based on its strong alkalinity, which is needed for many chemical reactions. The addition of NaOH in aqueous solution results in the formation of hydroxide ions (OH^-) and sodium cations (Na+). Because of its high alkalinity, caustic soda can be used to neutralize acids and also serves as an important ingredient in the manufacture of soaps or biodiesel.
The suitability of caustic soda for histological and pathological applications results from its pH-controlling as well as protein-naturing and -solubilizing properties.
