Sodium Azide 20 %
Sodium azide 20% is a single solution used in medical diagnostics, histology and scientific laboratories. The chemical name for sodium azide is NaN3, it is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water. Sodium azide is a strong oxidizing agent and can release dangerous gases when in contact with acids or metals.
In medical diagnostics, sodium azide is used as a preservative for blood samples to inhibit the activity of enzymes and thus increase the stability of the samples. In histology, sodium azide is used as a fixative for tissue samples to preserve cell structure and prepare the sample for further examination. In scientific laboratories, sodium azide is used as an inhibitor for enzymes to inhibit their activity and thus enable the study of enzyme functions.
The 20% solution is usually used as a stock solution to make dilutions from, or to add in small amounts to other solutions to be preserved.
