Southgate's Mucicarmine Stock Solution is a special staining solution used in histology and cytology to stain mucins and mucin-like substances in tissue specimens. These are a group of highly glycosylated proteins produced by epithelial cells that play an important role in mucus formation and secretion.
The Southgate method is used specifically to stain gastric and intestinal mucosa and is therefore useful for diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases, including cancer. The staining is based on the reaction of basic dyes with the acidic groups of mucins, resulting in an intense red staining that is easily visible under the microscope.
