LUGOLsche solution stabilized with PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) is an iodine-containing solution used in histology, cytology and medical diagnostics. The classic LUGOLsche solution consists of iodine and potassium iodide in water, while the PVP-stabilized version includes the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone to make the solution last longer, ensure even distribution of iodine, and reduce outgassing of iodine.

In histology and cytology, LUGOLsche solution with PVP is used to stain glycogen and mucins because iodine selectively reacts with these structures and stains them brown-black. In medical diagnostics, the solution is used especially in thyroid diagnostics to assess thyroid cells and their function. The addition of PVP makes the solution more stable and safer to handle, as the binding of iodine molecules to PVP prevents their evaporation.
