Solution to visualise austenite in accordance with DIN 50601
The solution for austenite imaging according to DIN 50601 is an etching solution mainly used in metallography. It is used for the representation of austenite grains and structures in steels and alloyed steels. DIN 50601 defines the requirements for this etching solution to allow standardized and reproducible visualization of austenite structures.
The solution typically consists of a mixture of acids and oxidizing agents capable of selectively etching the ferrite and pearlite in the steel to reveal the austenite structures. The exact composition can vary, but a common mixture contains nitric acid, perchloric acid and water, for example.
Using this solution allows steels to be examined under a microscope to analyze the microstructure of the material and draw conclusions about its mechanical properties. Austenite imaging is an important step in materials testing and quality control of steels and alloy steels.
