LÖFFLER's Methylene Blue is a single solution mainly used in in vitro diagnostics, histology and scientific laboratories. Consisting of ethanol, distilled aqua, potassium hydroxide solution and methylene blue, this product is used to stain specimens in the areas of TB staining according to ZIEHL-NEELSEN and to visualize tissue structures.

Methylene blue is a phenothiazine derivative with the molecular formula C16H18ClN3S. Staining with LÖFFLER's methylene blue is based on a chemical reaction in which the methylene blue acts as an electron accepting substance, selectively staining certain cell structures. This property is due to the chemical structure and electrostatic interaction with the stained substances.
