KIT: KLEMM- II Etching
Kit: KLEMM-III Etchant is used as a color etchant in metallography and scientific laboratories to examine pure copper, gunmetal, bronzes, alpha/beta brass, Al bronzes and Be bronzes. The composition includes aqua bidest, KLEMM stock solution and potassium disulfite (K2S2O5), but without specific amounts. The KLEMM stock solution is composed of sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) and potassium hydroxide (KOH), for example.
The chemical reactions that take place during etching lead to the formation of selective compounds that are bound to the respective metal and produce a coloration in the material under investigation. In this process, the reaction rates differ between different metals and alloys, highlighting the contrast in the material. Accordingly, there is a direct relationship between the chemical properties of the color etchant and the intended result.
Depending on the material being examined, the etching time ranges from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, which is referred to as wet etching. Re-etching is not possible in this case. After mixing the solution, it should be used within 1-2 days to achieve optimal results.
In summary, Kit: KLEMM-III Etching is primarily used for the examination and coloring of various copper alloys and bronze types.
