KLEMM stock solution

KLEMM stock solution is used in metallography and scientific laboratories. The solution is particularly suitable for preparing Klemm-I, Klemm-Il or Klemm-Il! etchants. Before use, it should be heated to 30-40° C and allowed to stand for 24 hours to allow some of the salt to crystallize.

The chemical details include the use of distilled aqua, a highly pure form of water, and sodium thiosulfate, a reducing agent present as a pentahydrate (Na2S203:5H2O). Upon heating, the reaction between these ingredients starts, producing crystallizing salt. The stock solution that can now be taken from it has an unlimited shelf life, while the etchant made from it is usable for 1-2 days.

KLEMM stock solution is a component of staining kits, such as Klemm-l, Klemm-Il and Klemm-Ill etches. The chemical reactions and properties of this solution make it possible to selectively represent different metals or surface structures. Thus, different results can be obtained during the etching process, for example in terms of contrasting grain structures or analyzing phases.
