KIT: Murakami etchant
KIT: Murakami etchant is a ready-to-use product mainly used in metallography as well as in scientific laboratories. It consists of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) (CAS No.: 13746-66-2) and a 10% caustic potash solution, also known as potassium hydroxide (KOH) (CAS No.: ). This kit enables the examination of hard metals, molybdenum and chromium alloys, tungsten, tungsten alloys and the visualization of carbides, sigma phases, delta ferrite and austenite.
The chemical reactions and properties of the etchant are based on the combination of potassium ferricyanide(III) (K3[Fe(CN)6]) and potassium hydroxide (KOH). The chemical compounds together form a strong oxidizing agent and a strong alkali metal capable of selectively etching the surface structures of metals to reveal their microstructural properties.
The application of the etchant gives different results depending on the metal, alloy and etching time (2-20 minutes). When applied freshly, the chemical reactions of the etchant can produce different color patterns or contrasts that indicate the microstructure in question.
