KIT: Etchant according to LICHTENEGGER and BLOECH
KIT: Etchant according to LICHTENEGGER and BLOECH consists of ammonium hydrogen difluoride (NH4HF2, CAS-No: 1341-49-7) and potassium metabisulfite (K2S2O5) in a 0.5% solution. It is successfully used for metallographic examination of austenitic CrNi steels and has proved useful in scientific laboratories. The main application is to color austenite and leave delta ferrite white.
The chemistry behind this product is based on the reaction between the two main components. The reaction of ammonium hydrogen difluoride and potassium metabisulfite creates a color etching solution that produces different colors on the metal surface depending on the exposure time.
The chemical properties of ammonium hydrogen difluoride allow it to etch glass and attack the metal surface during the etching process. Therefore, it is important to store the color etchant in a plastic container after the solution is prepared. The chemical reaction selectively attacks and colors the surfaces of the different phases in the steel, allowing a clear distinction between the austenitic and delta ferrite phases.
The results that can be obtained with this product depend on the exposure time: the longer the wet etching, the more intense the colors. This allows a detailed analysis of the microstructures and an improved classification of the examined crni-steels.
In summary, KIT: Etchant according to LICHTENEGGER and BLOECH is characterized by its application in the metallography of austenitic CrNi-steels.
