Gelatine serves in this solution as a hydrolysed collagen that is capable of binding large quantities of water and thus forms a gel-like consistency. The solution in deionized water guarantees the necessary purity and absence of impurities. Benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium salt, acts as an antimicrobial agent and contributes to the preservation of the sample.
