Gentian Violet, saturated aqueous
Gentian violet, saturated aqueous, is an intense violet solution composed of the triphenylmethane dye gentian violet (also known as crystal violet or basic violet 3) and water. The solution is saturated, meaning that it contains as much dye as the solvent (water) can hold.
Gentianaviolet is used in microbiology and histology, particularly as a component of the Gram stain for identifying and classifying bacteria. In addition, it can be used to treat fungal infections on the skin. In the laboratory, it can also serve as a simple pH indicator, as it changes color depending on the pH of the solution.
In its saturated, aqueous form, gentian violet is ready for direct use, such as application to preparations or direct treatment of skin infections.
