The contained Safranin O (C20H19N4Cl), a basic dye, binds preferentially to acidic, anionic components in plant cell walls, resulting in an intense red coloration. Astra blue (C45H44N3Na2O7S2), an acidic dye, binds to basic, cationic molecules and colors them blue. The interaction of the two dyes produces a broad color spectrum that allows differentiated observation of cell structures.
