Ferric chloride solution, a component of Bitter-Technik (etchant) kits, is a recognized staining agent, especially in metallography and scientific laboratory applications.
Its use is widespread due to its chemical
composition: Aqua dist. or deionized water, ferric chloride tetrahydrate and ferric chloride hexahydrate. The formulas of these components are H20,
FeCI2-4H20 and FeCI3-6H20. When the solution is mixed, ferric chlorides react to form complex ionic compounds. These provide excellent etchability for metals, initiating a variety of applications in materials science. Etched metal surfaces are thus obtained, which are characterized by labeled microstructural differences. This enables the study of metal grain structures and phases, allowing metallurgists and materials scientists to analyze the quality of metals. In summary, iron(III) chloride solution is primarily used for etching applications in the materials science field.
