Dimethyl Sulfoxid (DMSO)
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is indispensable as a laboratory reagent in medical and histological diagnostics. Thanks to its excellent solubility properties, it enables the uptake and transport of a wide range of molecules, including those that are poorly soluble in water. Its strong polarity and ability to break hydrogen bonds are of particular advantage.
In addition, DMSO plays a key role in the cryopreservation of cells by preventing the formation of ice crystals that could otherwise destroy cell structure. Thus, by using DMSO, valuable cell samples can be safely stored and returned to use at a later date without loss of functionality.
It should be noted, however, that although DMSO is generally well tolerated, it may have certain interactions with other substances that should be considered when planning experiments.
