DAVIDSON solution
The DAVIDSON solution is a ready-to-use fixing solution specially developed for histology. It consists of a combination of distilled water, denatured ethanol, acetic acid and phosphate-buffered formalin. The solution is ideal for fixation of tissue specimens, especially those requiring subsequent staining or immunohistochemistry.
The composition of DAVIDSON solution allows for rapid and effective fixation of tissue specimens, while preserving cell structures and morphology well. The alcohol component in the solution helps to dehydrate and degrease the tissue, while the acetic acid helps to stabilize nucleic acids and proteins and shorten tissue disruption time. Formalin acts as a preservative fixative, cross-linking proteins within cells to preserve their structure.
The DAVIDSON solution is particularly well suited for the fixation of invertebrates, fish, reptiles and amphibians, as well as soft tissues such as liver, spleen and lymph nodes. In addition, it can also be used for the fixation of plant material. Fixation with DAVIDSON solution allows for better morphology and antigen preservation compared to conventional fixatives such as Bouin solution or formalin alone.
For optimal fixation, tissue samples should be fixed in DAVIDSON solution for at least 24 hours at room temperature. After fixation, specimens can be further processed and prepared for histological studies such as staining or immunohistochemistry.
