Alkaline picric acid / sodium picrate solution
The ready-to-use sodium picrate solution is a mixture of sodium hydroxide and picric acid dissolved in water, specially developed for applications in metallography.
Applications for this solution are found in metallography, where it is used to detect nitriding zones and to visualize secondary cementite and eutectoid cementite in hypereutectoid steels. Its special suitability lies in its ability to effectively reveal the various phases and structures in steel samples at the microscopic level.
The chemical operation of sodium picrate solution is based on the interaction of picric acid and sodium hydroxide. The picric acid selectively reacts with the different phases in the steel samples, while the sodium hydroxide adjusts the pH of the solution to optimize the reaction.
Compared to other caustic solutions, the sodium picrate solution provides effective disclosure of nitriding zones, secondary cementite and eutectoid cementite in hypereutectoid steels. This results in improved examination and analysis of microscopic structures in steel samples, increasing the quality and accuracy of metallographic studies.
