Acetone Ethanol 4:1
Acetone alcohol 4:1, composed of acetone and denatured ethanol, is a mixture used in histology laboratories and medical diagnostics. It is mainly used as a dehydrating agent and for clarification in microscopy, where it prepares tissue sections for the transmitted light microscopy process.
The mixture consists of acetone (C3H6O) and ethanol (C2H5OH). Both are volatile, polar solvents that can soften both hydrophilic and lipophilic structures. In combination, they allow for gentle and rapid dehydration as well as defatting of tissue samples.
The result of an application of this mixture is complete dehydration and transparency of the tissue sample, allowing for better viewing under the microscope.
