Acetate Buffer 0.1 mol/l, pH 5.0
Acetate buffer pH 5.0 (0.1 mol/l) is used in biochemistry and molecular biology, especially in enzymatic reactions, DNA purification and immunoassays. It is suitable for keeping the pH value stable, an important property since enzyme activities are strongly influenced by pH fluctuations. When acetate buffer is used, hydrogen ions (H+) and acetate ions (CH3COO-) are formed. The ability of the buffer to absorb or release hydrogen ions without significantly changing the pH allows the specific pH environment to be maintained. This ensures consistent experimental conditions, which in turn allows reproducible results.
The buffer has a concentration of 0.1 mol/l. The osmolarity, derived from the concentration of dissolved particles, is 0.2 osmol/l, since both sodium acetate and acetic acid each contribute an osmotically active particle. The buffer capacity likewise at about 0.1 mol.
