Alsevers solution is used for in vitro testing of the anti-inflammatory effect of active substances and for stabilizing blood samples.

The citric acid-based buffer binds divalent cations, especially calcium ions, in aqueous solutions with the citrate anion as chelator. Alsevers solution can be used to store whole blood samples for up to ten weeks at 4 °C. Alsevers solution with blood cells is similar in principle to citrate blood.
