Macro etching agent acc. to PALMERTON
PALMERTON macroetching agent is a commonly used single solution in metallography and scientific laboratories, especially for Cu-containing Zn alloys. It is an aqueous solution of chromium(VI) oxide (CrO3) (CAS No.: 1333-82-0) sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) (CAS No.: 7757-82-6).
This etchant penetrates and reveals the microstructures of metals thanks to the chemical reactions of its components. Chromium(VI) oxide reacts as a strong oxidizing agent, attacking metal surfaces and revealing inhomogeneities. Sodium sulfate, on the other hand, helps stabilize the etching solution and prevents its deterioration. Aqua dist./VE water serves as a solvent and allows mixing of the solid components.
Applying the etchant to the metal surface reveals morphological differences between the various phases, grains, impurities and processing conditions of the Cu-containing Zn alloys. The etching time ranges from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the desired depth of examination and alloy composition.
Overall, the PALMERTON macro etchant is suitable for the examination and analysis of Cu-containing Zn alloys.
