Colour etchant acc. MARBLE
MARBLE etchant is a special etchant for metallography that is mainly used for macro and micro etching of austenitic and heat-resistant steels. It is also suitable for cobalt superalloys and Fe-Cr-Ni cast alloys. It consists of an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid (CAS no.: 7647-01-0) and copper(II) sulphate pentahydrate (CuSO4-5H2O).
The chemical reactions during the etching process can vary depending on the material and alloy, but are essentially redox reactions in which the metal is oxidized and the etchant component is reduced.
The chemical properties of the etchant ensure that it has a high oxidizing power, which attacks the metal surface and ensures the corresponding etching. The duration of the etching process varies from seconds to minutes, depending on the alloy and the desired etching depth.
The use of the etchant can result in microscopic structures such as microstructure, grain boundary and phase differences being made visible. This is particularly important in scientific laboratories and material testing.
