Etching agent acc. to KALLING 2
KALLING 2 etchant is a widely used and proven product in metallography and scientific laboratories. It is particularly suitable for use on stainless steels, Ni-Cu alloys and Ni-based superalloys. The main components of this etchant are ethanol, ultrapure water, hydrochloric acid and copper dichloride dihydrate. Chemically, the solution is a complex mixture of the above components, whose reactions and interactions take place at different levels.
An important aspect of the use of KALLING 2 lies in its effect on different phases and structural elements of the alloys under study. In the case of stainless steel, the etchant attacks ferrite rapidly and austenite slightly, but there is no attack on carbides. In the case of Ni-Cu alloys and Ni-based superalloys, the solution leads to dissolution of protective layers and uniform etching.
In the process of etching, the copper dichloride dihydrate dissolves the gamma dash phase and is reduced. Hydrochloric acid promotes this reaction and is used to set the proper acid concentration. Ethanol acts as a solvent to make the reaction homogeneous and to keep the copper dichloride in solution.
The application of the KALLING 2 etchant can lead to different results, depending on the alloy under investigation and the corresponding properties. Here, the method of dip or wipe etching as well as the exposure time is crucial for the final result. In summary, KALLING 2 is ideally suited for metallography and alloy investigations.
