Periodic Acid 2 %
Periodic acid 2% solution, consisting of periodic acid in aqua bidest, is primarily used in in vitro diagnostics, histology and scientific laboratories. Chemically, periodic acid is a strong oxidizing agent whose molecular formula is HIO4.
In use, periodic acid interacts with tissue components, especially carbohydrates. This utilizes the periodic oxidation of saccharides, which promotes the formation of aldehyde groups. This process leads to increased binding ability of tissues to staining agents.
