Periodic Acid 10 %
Periodic acid 10% solution has many applications in various fields such as medical diagnostics, histology, metallography and scientific laboratories. Due to its strong oxidizing ability, it is widely used for digestion reaction of organic samples, examination of biological tissues and etching of metals.
Chemically, the solution consists of periodic acid (HIO4) in distilled or deionized water. Periodic acid is an oxidized form of iodine (I), whose chemical formula is HIO4. This strong oxidizing agent demonstrates its effectiveness by decomposing organic compounds by oxidation, thereby visualizing certain structures in biological tissue or etching metal surfaces.
The chemical composition of the solution enables applications in histology by oxidizing aldehydes in chain-like polysaccharides to carboxylic acids. This oxidation contributes to the identification and labeling of stainable material used in histological preparations. In medical diagnostics, Periodic Acid 10% solution is also used to study various metabolic processes by oxidizing organic compounds to produce labelable materials. In metallography, the solution demonstrates its ability to selectively remove individual layers on metal surfaces, revealing differences in chemical composition and crystal structure.
