Sodium Carbonate Formaline after KOSSA

Sodium carbonate formalin according to KOSSA is an important solution in medical and scientific laboratories. It is commonly used in histology to fix tissue specimens because formaldehyde is a strong fixative that cross-links proteins by forming covalent bonds. In von KOSSA staining, it is used to visualize calcium deposits in tissues.

Chemically, the solution consists of formaldehyde, an aldehyde with the formula CH2O, and sodium carbonate, a salt with the formula Na2CO3. Formaldehyde is highly soluble in water and reacts with amino groups in proteins to form stable crosslinks. Sodium carbonate serves as a buffer to keep the pH stable.

The use of sodium carbonate formalin solution according to KOSSA can result in stable and well-preserved tissue specimens that allow accurate histological examination.

The molarity of the solution is approximately 0.47 M.
