KIT: Colour etchant according to BERAHA III
BERAHA III color etchant is used in metallography and scientific laboratories to study the microstructure and phase distribution in Ni-based cast alloys. It consists of ammonium hydrogen difluoride (NH4HF2), potassium disulfite (K2S2O5) and hydrochloric acid 4.0 mol/l (HCl). The solution reacts chemically with the metal surface, and the different sensitivities of the individual phases to the etching chemicals cause them to differ in color. For example, selective etching of segregations, carbides and precipitates takes place, but rolled alloys and welded joints can also be analyzed in detail.
The etching solution enables the study of grain boundary occupancies, orientations and deformation bands in the alloys. Addition of the kit components results in a caustic liquid, so plastic containers should be used. Glass is attacked by the solution. Wet etching of specimens should take between 30 s and 5 min. After the solution has been prepared, it can be kept for 1-2 hours.
The BERAHA III color etchant thus contributes to the detailed study of microstructural properties in Ni-based cast alloys.
