EDTA buffer 0.1 mol/l, pH 8.0 is mainly used in biological and biochemical research fields as well as in quality control of food and environmental samples. One of the main uses is the stabilization of enzymes and proteins, as this buffer has the ability to bind metal ions that could cause potential interference in sensitive biochemical reactions.

The chemical mode of operation is based on the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), a chelating compound that can bind metal ions such as calcium, magnesium and iron. By forming stable EDTA-metal complexes, these metal ions are removed from the reaction mixture and inactivated, stabilizing enzymatic activity and protein structure. The pH adjustment of the buffer to 8.0 enables optimal chelation and helps to ensure that biological processes can proceed in a suitable pH range.
