Formic Acid 20 %
Formic acid 20%, consisting of formic acid and distilled water, is used in medical diagnostics, histology and scientific laboratories. This solution is mainly used in formalin fixation, where it helps to enhance the fixation properties of formalin. In scientific laboratories, it is also used as a buffer substance.
Chemically, formic acid (HCOOH) is a weak acid. When combined with water, it forms hydronium ions (H3O+), which leads to a decrease in pH.
When used, it produces chemical reactions that lead to the cross-linking of proteins, which stabilizes tissue structure. Fixation with formic acid allows the tissue to maintain its morphological integrity, resulting in more precise and detailed histological images.
