Alcoholic Nitric Acid ~ 3 %
Alcoholic nitric acid ~ 3% (Nital) is a ready-to-use laboratory chemical suitable as a laboratory reagent and surface etchant in metallography. It consists of an ethanol and nitric acid.
Due to its chemical composition, the solution exhibits effective etching behavior, which is particularly useful for unalloyed and low-alloy steels, heat-treatable steels, cast irons and other materials. Nital is a common etchant for grinding burn testing and pearl tonguing and provides reproducible results due to its stable chemical properties.
The use of alcoholic nitric acid ~ 3 % (Nital) provides precise and meaningful results in metallography and enables the different microstructural constituents as well as material-related properties such as hardness zones or grinding burn to be effectively visualized.
